4 Myths to Avoid to Develop Your Creativity

The first step in developing a creative mindset is to avoid the myths of creativity.

Myth: Creativity is a fixed trait

Truth: Creativity is a learnable trait that can be developed at any age or stage of life. The more you learn and nurture your creativity, the stronger it becomes. Everything is learnable. Even though some people might be born with a higher level of creativity than you, it will fade away if they stop developing it. In contrast, if you are born with a low level of creativity, you can grow it through daily learning and practice. Soon, your creativity may surpass that of individuals who are born with a higher level of creativity but do not engage in learning and practice. Creativity is a trait that needs to be nourished daily to keep it strong.

Myth: Creativity is only for intelligent individuals

Truth: Everyone has creative potential. Did you know that you were born a creative individual? Did you know that you use your creativity every day to navigate life successfully? Without tapping into your creativity, you won't be able to overcome challenges and continue living. Creativity is a trait inherent to being human. If you think you are not creative, it is only because external factors have led you to believe otherwise. Although not everyone will become a creative genius, you don’t need to be one to harness your creativity for success in life.

Myth: Creativity is only for the artistic field

Truth: Creativity can be applied across all fields, including education, sports, business, mathematics, entertainment, science, personal life, and more. Creative acts can take various forms, such as products, procedures, processes, and performances. These acts of creativity can be nurtured in any discipline.

Myth: Creativity has to be something big

Truth: No matter how small or large the creative act is, the process of creating something new remains the same. If your act is novel, authentic, and useful, then it is creativity. Additionally, a big creative act often arises from a combination of smaller creative acts. Creativity can develop at various levels: individual, community, and societal. Regardless of the level at which your creative act occurs, it is still creativity.
